The Idolmake movie

1980’s “The Idolmaker,” directed by the maestro Taylor Hackford, catapults into the era of pompadours, sock hops, and the relentless pursuit of rock ‘n’ roll stardom. This underappreciated  musical drama stars a remarkable ensemble cast, including the tragic figure Ray Sharkey, the then unknown Peter Gallagher, the cool-as-ice Paul Land (not yet on TJ Hooker), the accomplished Tovah Feldshuh, and the enigmatic but still trying to find his way Joe Pantoliano.

The film takes a page from the real-life story of Bob Marcucci, a legendary rock promoter and producer who rocketed stars like Frankie Avalon and Fabian to fame.

Set amidst the vibrant backdrop of 1959, we follow Vincent “Vinnie” Vacarri, a scrappy Bronx songwriter portrayed intensly by Ray Sharkey. Vinnie, accompanied by his trusty piano-playing comrade Gino “G.G.” Pilato (Joe Pantoliano), is on an admirable but somewhat misguided quest for glory.

They stumble upon the raw talent of a local saxophone virtuoso, Tomaso DeLorusso, (Paul Land). The intent was to see the blonde, not quite what Vaccari had in mind lead singer of the combo. Going with DeLorusso instead, and with Vinnie’s unyielding guidance, the newly christened “Tommy Dee” undergoes a metamorphosis, evolving into a rock ‘n’ roll sensation that sets underage hearts ablaze.

Yet, as the search for success persists, Vinnie unearths another diamond in the rough, the local teen busboy Guido, portrayed by the ever-suave Peter Gallagher. Well, awkward at first – suave later.

This discovery sparks a cataclysmic rivalry as Tommy Dee, now smug and self-absorbed, leaves Vinnie for a new manager. Fueled by determination bordering on obsession, Vinnie dives headfirst into sculpting Guido’s image, refusing to leave any stone unturned.

As the world watches these burgeoning teen idols rise, Vinnie’s girlfriend, Brenda, (Tovah Feldshuh), trembles with concern. She’s a teen magazine editor with an eagle eye for success but a heart heavy with worry. Vinnie’s unrelenting drive threatens to consume not only those around him but also the very essence of his own being.

“The Idolmaker” is a time capsule that whisks us back to an era where music reigned supreme and the pursuit of stardom knew no bounds. Or consequences.

The film’s performances, coupled with its intense character dynamics, weave an interesting narrative that’s as timeless as the melodies that fill the airwaves.
