Marvelous 3 Stays Marvelous with Reunion Album IV

Marvelous 3, the infamous Atlanta-based power pop trio, have made a triumphant return to the music scene.

Comprising Butch Walker on guitar and vocals, Jayce Fincher on bass, and Mitch ‘Slug’ McLee on drums, this band once made waves with their 1998 hit “Freak of the Week” from the album “Hey! Album.”

Their style, characterized by eyeliner and skinny jeans, was distinctly ahead of its time in the late ’90s.

Despite their initial success, which included their song featuring on MTV’s TRL and comparisons to bands like Cheap Trick, Alex Chilton (two points for the reference) and in some ways Nirvana (they had some catchy singles before they wanted to be taken seriously), their journey was not without challenges.

They grew from a discarded hair metal band. To a cool indie band. To a mainstream success appearing on The Tonight Show.

And then…

After their album “ReadySexGo,” an adventurous take on arena rock, they faced contractual issues (or whatever issues – ’tis the music business full of dysfunction) with their label Elektra Records, leading to their eventual disbandment.

Fast forward to 2023, and the Marvelous 3 not only reunited but also releaseda new album titled IV. This marks a significant comeback, 25 years after their break through”Hey! Album.”

Butch Walker, in the years between the M3 breakup and yesterday, carved out a successful career producing for top musicians and releasing critically lauded solo albums.

However, the return of Marvelous 3 with IV is poised to be one of the most unexpected and exciting releases. The album promises a return to the power pop anthems that defined their earlier work, with a contemporary twist.

And the sucker came out of nowhere.

IV stands out for its immediate connection with the M3 army, filled with toe tapping melodies and say what? lyrics.

Don’t forget its tongue in cheek silliness and absurdity. Its also melancholy at times.

Oh – that Butch. So metro-sexual.

Is that even a term these days?

The opening track, “Old School Metal Heart,” features a nostalgic video and sets the tone with its comical narrative and M3esque hooks. GAWD I missed these guys.

Another highlight, “Kill The Motherfucker That Breaks Your Heart,” showcases seductive riffs and a yet ANOTHER memorable chorus, potentially becoming the standout track of the decade.

Butch Walker’s ability to evoke nostalgia and emotion is unmatched. One minute you’re laughing. The next – you’re silently sobbing in a bathroom stall.

IV spans a range of styles from anthemic power pop to reflective ballads, creating a sense of familiarity yet freshness.

Notably, tracks like “Jackie & Tina” and”If We’re On Fire (Let It Burn)” showcase the band’s ever present versatility. There’s always a twist and a turn. Then a return to center.

Marvelous 3‘s IV is more than just a collection of retread songs trying to remind everyone of the 90s; it’s a journey through musical excellence, blending retrospection and contemporary sound.

Wow – that’s so damn pretentious. Sorry, guys!

The band, now in their 50s (but they look MUCH younger), has recaptured the energy and passion of their youth, making IV a groovy listen.

It’s quite the comeback story – ain’t it?
