A Rock Legacy Bids Farewell – Foreigner’s Impact on Rock Music

Few bands in rock history have managed to strike the perfect balance between raw power and melodic sophistication the way Foreigner has.

Emerging in the late 1970s, they quickly became one of the biggest rock acts in the world, seamlessly blending bluesy guitar riffs, anthemic choruses, and vocals that soared from radio and stereo speakers.

Kids – there were no AirPods or fancy wireless headphones in those days.

The Breakthrough – Defining a New Era in Rock

Every legendary band has a beginning, and Foreigner’s roots can be traced back to 1976 when English guitarist Mick Jones joined forces with American vocalist Lou Gramm.

Alongside Ian McDonald, Dennis Elliott, Al Greenwood, and Ed Gagliardi, they formed a powerhouse rock group that was destined for greatness.

Their name, Foreigner, was a nod to their international lineup—a mix of British and American musicians.

Their self-titled debut album, Foreigner* (1977), was an instant hit, propelled by “Feels Like the First Time” and “Cold as Ice.”

Foreigner had an edge and later an  ability to straddle multiple styles would serve them well throughout their career.

With over 80 million records sold worldwide, they rank among the best-selling rock bands in history.

Their sophomore album, Double Vision* (1978), built upon their initial success, producing hits like “Hot Blooded” and the title track.

Head Games* (1979) took a slightly edgier approach, featuring songs that resonated with rebellious youth, such as “Dirty White Boy.”

But it was 4* (1981), with smash hits like “Urgent,” “Juke Box Hero,” and “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” that  became a defining album of the ‘80s rock scene and went on to sell over seven million copies in the U.S. alone.

Before streaming platforms and MTV, radio was the lifeblood of any rock band’s career. And Foreigner was a mainstay on rock and Top 40 stations throughout the late ‘70s and ‘80s. Their music was tailor-made for radio.

Critics called it “arena rock.” Band members and management called it “success.”

When MTV launched in 1981, it revolutionized the music industry by making visuals just as important as the music itself.

Foreigner, like many rock bands of the era, embraced this new medium and used it to their advantage.

I Want to Know What Love Is”  helped introduce Foreigner to a more diverse audience that was  well beyond the confines of rock radio.

Released in 1984, its emotional depth and concluding chorus arrangement made it stand out. Not a lot of rock bands were working with gospel choruses back then.

Over the years, the song has been covered by numerous artists (Mariah Carey, Wynonna Judd, Tina Arena), proving that its appeal crosses typical musical genres.

Why Foreigner Is Wrapping Up Their Touring Career

After decades on the road, the band has decided to retire from extensive touring.

Previously, founding member Mick Jones has spoken about the physical demands of performing and the desire to go out on a high note.

Today, Jones’ battle with Parkinson’s disease has understandably limited his ability to tour with Foreigner.

Foreigner’s ongoing performances, though missing Jones’ physical presence, carry forward his musical spirit, ensuring that his contributions to rock music are celebrated and remembered.
