Sass Jordan Live in New York

Renowned for her gritty and soulful voice, Sass Jordan carved a niche in the rock and blues genre in the early 1990s. Her album ‘Racine’, launched in 1992, resonated with a sound reminiscent of the Black Crowes, aligning her with the era’s rock sensibilities. This was especially evident before the alternative rock wave took over. Her 1994 album ‘Rats’, which featured future Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, marked a shift towards a more robust sound. Beyond her albums, Jordan’s role as a Canadian Idol judge for six seasons and her subsequent blues-focused albums, ‘Rebel Moon Blues’ and ‘Bitches Blues’, released in 2020 and 2022, respectively, highlight her dynamic career trajectory.

Jordan, who was born in Birmingham, England, and raised in Montreal, Canada, was exposed to diverse musical influences from a young age. She honed her talents in various bands, eventually embarking on a solo career. Her debut album, ‘Tell Somebody’, released in 1988, won her critical acclaim and a Juno award. Following this, she sought to capture the American market with ‘Racine’. Her contributions to the soundtrack of The Bodyguard, particularly her duet with Joe Cocker, further boosted her profile.

Despite her evolving sound in the mid-90s with albums like ‘Rats’ and ‘Present’, Jordan did not find sustained mainstream rock success. She then ventured into theatre and television, including a memorable stint on Canadian Idol, which significantly raised her public profile. Her later works, including ‘Get What You Give’ and ‘From Dusk ‘Til Dawn’, saw her collaborating with well-known musicians, marking a return to her rock roots.

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of ‘Racine’ in 2017, Jordan re-released the album as ‘Racine Revisited’. Her more recent foray into blues with ‘Rebel Moon Blues’ and ‘Bitches Blues’ has been met with critical and chart success.

Her latest project, ‘Live in New York Ninety-Four’, pays homage to Taylor Hawkins. This live album, recorded during her 1994 tour, offers a glimpse into Jordan’s energetic performances and includes unique photographs from that period. Through this release, Jordan commemorates Hawkins’ early career and his lasting impact on music, celebrating his vibrant spirit and contributions.
